Designer Handbags And The Fashion Revolution

Do you remember the movie The Stepford Wives? If not, The Stepford Wives was a community of fantastically beautiful women who heeded their husbands’ rules with complete, blind obedience. So this brings up the subject: Rules. The 1950’s fashion realm was dominated by rules and guidelines that dictated everything from acceptable recreational activities to the color of a designer handbag. These rules are still, in many people’s minds, active today. But I’m here to tell you that it’s time to take the majority of those outdated, irrelevant fashion rules and throw them away – for good. It’s the 21st century, so ditch suffocating fashion rules and discover what you’ve been missing all these years.

One of the most traditionally popular faux-pas is white after Labor Day. In many social groups, wearing a white designer handbag after Labor Day can cause months of gossip, and may even eject you from the most liberal-minded country club. Obviously, many people are still lassoed to this rule, even though celebrities everywhere are openly and triumphantly rejecting this old standby. Rachel Bilson, for example, has said, “I love white all year round.” And why shouldn’t you? Winter can be such a drag, especially when the only colors that you seem to find are black, gray, and brown. It’s already freezing outside – why not have a little fun and lighten things up with a splash of white? Besides, it’s already a Winter Wonderland out there, which is all the more reason to blend in. Give up this rule, and brighten up your wardrobe, as well as your mindset.

The most obnoxious fashion rule of all time is matching your designer handbag to your shoes. Come on. First of all, to do this, you’d pretty much need to have an entire department store of shoes and purses in your closet. And second of all, who cares? It’s critical that your outfit looks relatively pulled together, but the whole shoes and bag rule is just plain outdated. Today, more women have full-time jobs, are mothers, and just simply don’t have time each morning to ensure that their handbag is perfectly matched to their designer shoes. This rule isn’t just a hassle, but it’s also near impossible to do on a daily basis. And even if you do end up matching your shoes to your purse, chances are that they’re not ever going to COMPLETELY match. So ditch this rule TODAY, and see the opportunities pour in!

In Junior High, I was severely reprimanded for wearing a dark brown belt with black pants. For years after this, I was constantly self-conscious about mixing black with dark blue or brown. It wasn’t until about a year ago, while I was living with a very fashionable girl, that I was liberated from this annoying “rule.” My roommate constantly mixed black tights with navy dresses, and to top it off, she added a dark brown designer handbag! And guess what – she looked fabulous. This rule severely limits many possibilities that can create an intoxicating look. The mlange of these three colors is mysterious – which is all the reason more to mix these colors. In related news, there’s also a ridiculous fashion rule that dictates that redheads shouldn’t wear red. This is simply just not true. For all you redheads out there, feel free to wear as much red as you want! Chances are, you’ve never looked better.

One fashion rule that’s still hard for me to break free of is mixing metals. For example, this rule states that you can’t wear gold earrings with a silver bracelet; and the most hideous thing you could do is wear a necklace that mixes both types of metal! This rule is outdated, and the newest fashion trends actually recommend mixing different metallics! One of the most popular styles of designer handbags breaks this rule. Feel free to be funky and mix up your metals, because trust me, there aren’t fashion police around the corner ready to arrest you. Another rule that simply MUST be broken is that of tights and open-toed shoes. Tights worn with open-toed shoes have become not only adorable, but extremely popular on the runways. Just make sure that you can’t see the seams of your tights, and you’re all set! This is one fashion rule that needs to be broken – immediately. So feel free to experiment and widen your fashion horizons by breaking this rule.
